In the distant South American country of Brazil, Takahashi (played by Kanji Ishihara), who runs a photo studio, and his wife Miyuki (played by Takako Tokiwa), a teacher for Japanese children, lead a peaceful and happy life. However, set against the backdrop of World War II, any happiness is fragile. Although the news of Japan's surrender arrives, the majority of Japanese people, led by Colonel Watanabe (played by Eiji Okuda), refuse to believe this fact. Moreover, with very few understanding Portuguese news, they are convinced that this is merely a propaganda trick by the Empire. All Japanese who accept the defeat are labeled as "traitors," while Takahashi is entrusted by Watanabe with the important task of eliminating those who undermine the military and civilian morale… Background introduction: The "victory group" purge action by Brazilian Japanese immigrants after World War II resulted in a tragedy of 23 deaths, 147 injuries, and 381 arrests. Journalist Fernando Morais based his work "Dirty Heart" on this incident, and the film is adapted from that book.
