The film, written by James Goldman, depicts the later life of Russia's last Tsar, Nicholas II, from 1904 to the execution of his entire family following the Russian Revolution in 1918. It is a heavy, epic court drama with a somewhat monotonous and dreary story. Director Franklin J. Schaffner's approach is quite solemn, and the outstanding art and costume design vividly recreate the scenes of the Russian court of that era. Actors like Michael Jayston also deliver generally excellent performances. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
