"Wax Museum," directed by Paul Leni in 1924, is widely regarded as the last work of Expressionism. This film adopts a narrative structure similar to "The Tired Death," telling the story of a wax museum owner who invites a writer to create stories for his wax figures. The writer develops three tales: the story of Harun al-Rashid, the story of Ivan the Terrible, and the story of "Jack the Ripper." The first is almost entirely derived from "The Tired Death," the second concerns a tyrant in Russian history, and the third is bizarre and strange, essentially combining two modern British murderers, "Spring-heeled Jack" and "Jack the Ripper," both of whom are unsolved cases in history, rumored to be messengers from hell, bloodthirsty and murderous in the mortal world. In the end, even the writer himself is pursued by Jack. I believe that the contemporary horror films about serial killers can trace their origins back to this film.
