Paul (Richard Pasco) arrives at the small town where his father and brother lived before their untimely deaths to investigate the truth behind their demise. The townspeople give Paul a very eerie feeling; they are timid and seem to tremble as if something terrifying lurks in the night, ready to take their lives at any moment. Dr. Neiman (Peter Cushing), who was once his father's assistant, draws Paul's attention with his strange behaviors alongside a mysterious beauty named Carla (Barbara Shelley). Carla appears to suffer from a peculiar illness, often fainting and losing her memory, while Dr. Neiman seems to be smitten with her, taking on the role of her protector. So, do the deaths of Paul’s father and brother have any connection to these two?
