Roger (played by Cary Grant) is an ordinary advertising executive who has recently found himself inexplicably in trouble—he has been mistaken for a man named "Kaplan," and he is even drugged and placed into a car with the intention of causing a fatal accident. Fortunately, Roger miraculously escapes this ordeal. This strange experience fills him with both dread and curiosity, and to prove his innocence, he feels compelled to track down the real "Kaplan." Misfortune continues to pursue Roger. He desperately tries to evade his pursuers while tracking down clues about Kaplan. He boards a train to Chicago, where he unexpectedly encounters the charming Eve Kendall (played by Eva Marie Saint), who is willing to lend a helping hand. Just as he is about to meet Kaplan, things take another turn—he not only fails to meet Kaplan but also finds himself embroiled in yet another crisis. The truth becomes increasingly elusive, and the presidential statue on Mount Rushmore becomes a grand stage for a fight for his life.
