This film is a sequel to "The Talented Mr. Ripley." In the previous installment, Ripley (John Malkovich) transformed from an unknown poor kid into a wealthy tycoon through his intelligence and cunning. After marrying his pianist wife, Louisa (Chiara Caselli), Ripley returned to a quiet life. However, his slyness and ambition never changed; when he learned that craftsman Jonathan (Dougray Scott) was speaking ill of him behind his back, the flames of revenge ignited within Ripley's heart. When Ripley's friend wanted him to eliminate a competitor, Ripley thought of Jonathan, who, being financially strapped, could not resist the temptation of a high reward. Ripley's actions were clearly the primary cause of Jonathan's death; while he might escape the law, he could not escape the condemnation of his conscience. Watching the back of his beloved wife, Ripley felt a mix of emotions.
