In early 1946, the Northeast People's Liberation Army decisively annihilated the Kuomintang's "Thousand-Mile Steed" division and captured a number of officers. Company instructor Song Zhigang was ordered to lead a platoon to escort prisoners of war through the enemy's frontline to the Liaodong Military Region's station. Disguised as a captured soldier, enemy agent chief Yang Ziming fled to seek help, while captured enemy division commander Sun Zhenshu dropped a medal on the road to guide the rescuing enemy troops and secretly instructed his subordinates to create disturbances and feign illness to buy time. The PLA soldiers cleverly subdued the unruly prisoners and placed the medal on another road, leading the rescuing enemy forces the wrong way. When enemy planes came to scout, Sun Zhenshu attempted to signal them with fire, but his plot was timely uncovered. To obtain the true situation, Yang Ziming impersonated an injured PLA soldier, infiltrating the PLA and conspiring with Sun Zhenshu to instruct a cavalry company to seize the crucial Shuanglongjiang Bridge. Song Zhigang turned the tables, luring Sun Zhenshu into writing to the cavalry company guarding the bridge to come for a 'robbery,' and sent reconnaissance platoon leader Liu Chunhai to pose as an enemy to deliver the letter, leading the enemy cavalry company into a PLA encirclement. A small number of soldiers seized the opportunity to escort the prisoners, and with the support of the county detachment, they successfully crossed the bridge and entered the PLA defense zone. By the time the enemy cavalry company and reinforcements realized, the bridge had been blown up by the PLA, and they were left helpless, unable to cross the river to give chase.
