Kevin (Paul Dano) is a genius novelist who became a nationally renowned writer with his debut work, but he encounters a bottleneck with his second book. Meanwhile, his life is less than satisfactory; since his first love left him, Kevin has been alone, even calling himself "the type unsuitable for dating." Thus, Kevin begins to dream up an ideal type named Ruby (Zoe Kazan) and records her in his dreams to prepare material for his new book. Kevin spends several nights dreaming and days writing. Until one day, Kevin wakes up to find that the Ruby from his dreams has actually appeared in his life, and more remarkably, Kevin can change the real Ruby by writing about the fictional one...
