Mr. Verdoux (played by Charles Chaplin) was once a bank employee, living a quiet but happy life with his wife Mona (played by Mady Correll) and son Peter (played by Allison Roddan). The arrival of the Great Depression led Mr. Verdoux to lose his job, and with a family to support, he found himself homeless on the streets, overwhelmed by despair. One day, by chance, Mr. Verdoux comes across a magical poison that can kill without a trace. With this "weapon" in his possession, a brilliant plan is born in his mind. Soon, wealthy but dim-witted women like Selma (played by Helene Heigh), Lydia (played by Margaret Hoffman), and Grona (played by Isobel Elsom) become the victims of Mr. Verdoux, and their vast fortunes end up in his pockets.
