An elderly couple, Bob Carter (Ted Levin) and Ethel (Kathleen Quinlan), celebrate their wedding anniversary by taking a road trip across the border with their family. They hope to strengthen their family bonds during the trip, but various frictions arise that continually test their relationships. As the journey leads them into a desolate sandy area, they are attacked one night while camping by a group of monsters. It turns out that there was a former U.S. military nuclear weapons development base nearby, and nuclear experiments have subjected the people of a nearby village to terrifying radiation, leaving the survivors physically deformed and violent. They ambush the family and brutally hunt them down, but the initially timid son-in-law, Doug Bukowski (Aaron Stanford), resolves to rise up and retaliate fiercely.
