The villain Lamont (played by Alec Baldwin) is known as the Butcher of Sorrow. He is irredeemably wicked until he encounters a high monk who gradually reforms him, turning him into a good man and teaching him Eastern mystical arts. Later, Lamont arrives in 1930s New York, taking on the alias of the Shadow Man, robbing the rich to help the poor and punishing evil while promoting good. Shuyun Khan (played by John Lone) is another disciple of the high monk, but he is actually the reincarnation of the war god Genghis Khan. Shuyun, inherently evil, could not be reformed by the monk; he not only kills his master but also steals the powerful Vajra staff. He intends to fulfill the unachieved ambitions of Genghis Khan and become the ruler of the world. Naturally, Lamont will not let Shuyun get away with it.
