In the gloomy and somber city of Washington, a single mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), lives in an ordinary apartment with her daughter, Regan. Recently, Chris has been tormented by her daughter's strange behaviors, which are abnormal and peculiar. Chris takes her to various doctors, but to no avail; even psychiatrists are at a loss. Desperate, she turns to Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), an elderly man with extensive exorcism experience. On a terrifying night, the priest engages in a fierce battle with the demon hiding within the girl. This is a demonic night that will forever leave an indelible mark on countless people... This film is adapted from a novel by William Peter Blatty based on a true exorcism event in 1949 and won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing and Best Adapted Screenplay.
