Living in Chicago, Fred Claus (played by Vince Vaughn) is a loquacious and somewhat arrogant guy. Surprisingly, he has a brother named Nick (played by Paul Giamatti), who is the current Santa Claus. The two brothers have been very different since childhood; unlike his kind-hearted brother, Fred is selfish and cold. On Christmas Eve, he plans to open a casino but still has $50,000 in funding that hasn't come through. At this critical moment, Fred is taken to the North Pole by a little elf named Willie (played by John Michael Higgins). Due to the hectic schedule during Christmas, Santa and his helpers are overwhelmed and ask Fred for help in preparing Christmas gifts. In exchange for money, Fred agrees to his brother's request. Meanwhile, an official overseeing major holidays arrives at the North Pole. He is quite dissatisfied with the deficits caused by these holidays and decides to take over the Christmas gift distribution work.
