In the midnight of Chicago, a murderer named Chucky, injured by gunfire while being pursued by Detective Mike (Chris Sarandon), frantically escapes into a toy store. With nowhere to turn, Chucky chants a spell to transfer his soul into a doll. Single mother Karen (Catherine Hicks), working in the mall, struggles to find a birthday gift for her son Andy (Alex Vincent). When she spots a cheap doll being sold by a homeless man, she excitedly buys it. Unbeknownst to her, this doll is the vessel containing the soul of the murderer, Chucky. The doll, which introduces itself as "Chucky," starts talking to Andy in private and goes on to kill Andy's aunt and its former accomplices. Andy witnesses the doll's murders but finds no one believes him. Soon, Karen discovers the doll's secret, but it seems to be too late...
