Hundreds of years ago, in Europe, there were groups of people with mysterious powers who were regarded as demons and executed, forcing them to flee to the Americas. In the seventeenth century, five powerful families united to establish the Ipswich Colony; they formed covenants for self-protection, hiding among ordinary people. Four heirs of the five families—Caleb (played by Steven Strait), Reid, Tyler, and Berg—of similar age become friends, making their small group the focus of the school.
