A social satire by Clair before immigrating to Hollywood, revealing the mechanized control and exploitation of workers by bourgeois society, featuring a light comedic style, it is an early classic. The film tells the differing fates of two tramps amidst the waves of industrialization and automation, one becoming a wealthy man, while the other is merely enchanted by nature. After escaping from prison, the protagonist builds a record factory (a reference to the record company Pathé), and the assembly line production makes the atmosphere akin to that of a prison. This film inspired Chaplin's "Modern Times," and its incisive thought is comparable to Chaplin's work. (The film company once sued Chaplin for copyright infringement, but later Clair dropped the lawsuit and said, “If I can inspire Chaplin's creativity, it is my honor,” also admitting that his character of the tramp is derived from Chaplin.) The film was shot without a script, allowing the actors to improvise on set. The use of music in the film is groundbreaking and is praised as one of the best film scores in cinema history.
