This documentary is directed by Wim Wenders, the renowned director of "Paris, Texas" and "Wings of Desire," and is inspired by a trip to Cuba taken by his musical partner Ry Cooder. During the trip, Cooder discovered the touching story behind a local band, and at his urging, Wenders brought a film crew to Cuba in 1988 to begin this famous shoot. He used documentary methods to capture the film, and thus, this group of Cuban artists, long forgotten and overlooked, was brought back into the limelight with the success of the movie and the release of the album CD. It was as if the world awakened from a slumber to once again see and hear Cuba, gaining an appreciation for the captivating charm of Cuban music. These elderly Cuban musicians transcended political barriers through their music and were exceptionally invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York. After their performance, the attendees stood and applauded, moving the musicians to tears. Later, when they tried to call back to Cuba to share their joy, they found the lines were dead; it turned out the two countries had no diplomatic relations... Their innocence and charm were vividly captured by Wenders. Upon its release, the film received overwhelming approval from the majority, winning 13 Best Documentary awards at various international film festivals including the European Film Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and the National Society of Film Critics, as well as nominations for the Oscars for Best Documentary, making it one of the most internationally recognized music films in recent years.
