In the United States, more than 100,000 believers live under the shadow of sexual abuse perpetrated by church clergy, where justice and judgment seem so far out of reach. So far, the church has spent at least $1 billion to cope with the pressure from victims seeking legal recourse, yet not a single clergy member has been convicted... This situation improved somewhat when the Catholic Church's most notorious pedophile priest, Oliver O'Grady, was forced to return to his hometown in Ireland. The documentary titled "The Big Rescue" follows in his footsteps to uncover the darkest dealings within the Catholic Church that remain largely unknown. Oliver O'Grady was a cold, uncontrollable, and driven predator, who used the charismatic authority of his religious leadership to infiltrate Catholic families and molest countless young children across parishes in Southern California. Over more than 20 years, he inflicted significant physical and psychological harm on these children, whose ages varied widely—from middle-aged women who were already mothers to infants as young as nine months old. As early as the early years of O'Grady's offenses, several parishioners complained to the archbishop of their diocese; however, the diocese not only failed to stop O'Grady's heinous acts but also orchestrated various lies to convince parishioners of his "innocence" while transferring him from one parish to another to evade legal consequences. Nevertheless, internal church documents show that the higher-ups in the church were aware of O'Grady's actions as far back as 1973. It was the church's protection that allowed O'Grady's pedophilia to become a habit, and eventually a compulsion... Only after he was finally convicted and exiled did the truth come to light, causing the collapse of dozens of Catholic families upon learning the truth. Behind the Scenes: Female director Amy Berg never imagined she would create such a documentary filled with anger and despair. In the process of searching for news stories for CBS and CNN, she dedicated four years to investigating priests suspected of pedophilia and published multiple news documentaries under her name on this subject… Soon, Berg’s name became well-known among Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and his over 550 priests...
