"Holding the Moonlight in Water" chronicles the legendary life of Ye Jiaying (1924-), a master of Chinese classical poetry. Throughout her life, she has experienced wars, political persecution, and a life of exile, returning in her later years to a reformed, open China, where she continues to create and teach, reestablishing the interrupted legacy of classical poetry from the Cultural Revolution. The film interweaves Ye Jiaying's personal life with the millennia-old tradition of Chinese classical poetry, showcasing her quest for meaning in the flow of poetry. "Commentary on Du Fu's Eight Poems of Autumn Feelings" is Ye Jiaying's most significant research work, depicting the rise and fall of the Tang Dynasty. This film uses it as a metaphor for the tumultuous years Mr. Ye experienced and invites musician Sato Sōmei to create a film score based on the Eight Poems of Autumn Feelings, blending traditional and modern music to breathe new life into Du Fu's poetry.
