John (played by Richard Gere) is a reporter who specializes in investigating inexplicable events that science cannot explain. The accidental death of his wife, Mary (played by Debra Messing), plunges his once happy life into despair. What haunts John are the paintings left by his wife, featuring eerie images that remind him of some strange things she had said before her death, suggesting that Mary's passing might not have been an accident. One day, while on a business trip, John gets lost and ends up in a place called Point Pleasant, where bizarre and terrifying events are occurring. Driven by curiosity, John decides to stay and investigate. To his astonishment, the horrifying figure from his wife's painting appears in the dreams of the town's residents, who refer to this vague figure as the "Mothman."
