This is a splendid and wonderful collection of travel films, newsreels, and home movies that takes you back to China in the first half of the 20th century. All the materials in the film come from the National Archive of the British Film Institute, created by a large number of British and French filmmakers, both professional and amateur travelers, expatriates from the colonial era, and Christian missionaries. The film recreates scenes rich in Chinese characteristics and historical significance, such as the fashionable Nanjing Road in Shanghai in 1900, the Daguo Amusement Park in 1929, the Shanghai International Expo in 1937, Qianmen Street in Beijing in 1910, and the picturesque canals of Hangzhou in 1925. Here, you can wander through major cities in China like Hong Kong, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Kunming, and explore the remote villages of Hunan and Yunnan. The visually concrete yet fleeting images in the film may be the oldest footage of China ever captured in films. At the 2015 Shanghai International Film Festival, renowned British silent film pianist John Sweeney performed live accompaniment for this film.
