In the 1900s, late Qing Beijing. The capital, ravaged by the Eight-Nation Alliance, is left in ruins. Determined to overthrow the Qing dynasty, Qiu Jin (played by Li Xiuming) travels to Japan to study with the financial support of friends, seeking the truth to save the nation. She allies with Xu Xilin (played by Li Zhiyu) and meets the author of "The Alarm Bell," Chen Tianhua (played by Chen Xiguang). In a foreign land, they find like-minded souls, all dreaming of the future of their motherland. Their revolutionary activities are restricted by Japanese authorities, prompting a large student assembly to protest. Chen Tianhua even sacrifices himself by drowning to awaken the masses. Soon, Qiu Jin is assigned by Sun Yat-sen (played by Shi Weijian) to return to Shanghai and establish the Chinese Women's Newspaper.
