The story takes place at the Kitteridge Preparatory School, where James (played by William Hurt) teaches. With his unique teaching methods, James quickly won the admiration of his students and the trust of his colleagues, and he himself is very satisfied with his peaceful life here. Sara (played by Marlee Matlin) was once a student at this school. After graduating, she went through various experiences before returning to work here as a janitor. Due to her physical disability, Sara has a reclusive personality, but this attracts James's attention. He reaches out to her, hoping to help her regain confidence and continue her education. As time goes by, Sara's attitude toward James changes from complete resistance to a slight fondness; her character begins to transform, and the distance between her and James gradually decreases. Just then, new problems arise.
