The film tells the story of the shooting of five Australian journalists during Indonesia's invasion of East Timor in 1975. It is actually narrated through the perspective of the sixth Australian, Roger East, who was a survivor of the tragedy. Behind the Scenes The "Balibo Five" incident continues to cast a shadow over Australia-Indonesia relations. 34 years ago, five Australian television reporters were killed while attempting to document the Indonesian invasion of the then Portuguese colony of East Timor, and this matter has not been properly resolved officially. The 2009 film "Balibo" reignited Australian interest in the case. The five journalists died in October 1975 in the Indonesian border town of Balibo, and their bodies were quickly buried. The Indonesian side has always claimed that the five men died in crossfire between Indonesian soldiers and independence fighters. Despite strong dissatisfaction from the families of the deceased, Australia has never questioned this explanation due to concerns about maintaining diplomatic relations. Australia's silence on this matter was only broken two years ago. A coroner in New South Wales found that the five journalists were deliberately killed by Indonesian special forces under the orders of Captain Yunus Yosfiah to prevent them from exposing Indonesia's attack on Balibo. Australian Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd responded immediately, stating that "those responsible should be held accountable." This report is still held by the police. The film "Balibo" painstakingly recounts the deaths of the five journalists from the perspective of the sixth reporter, Roger East. Roger investigates the fate of the previous five journalists and is tragically shot when Indonesian forces arrive in Dili. The young reporters were risking their lives filming somewhere, and their communication with the outside world was soon cut off. As Indonesian forces approached, one member of the group, Greg Shackleton, sketched the Australian flag on a wall to save his life. Director Robert Connolly stated that he made this film not only to expose the innocent deaths of the journalists and thousands of East Timorese people, but also to highlight that national symbols hold no meaning in a state of complete chaos. International legal expert Ben Saul indicated that, since order has been restored, the cause of death of the Balibo Five should be prosecuted as a war crime in court. Connolly hopes that both Indonesia and Australia will eventually deal with the truth of the facts rigorously. However, as relations between the two sides have never improved, and Indonesia has been unwilling to investigate the various malfeasances during Suharto's dictatorship before 1998, this truth may ultimately remain hidden.
