The disappearance of his son Tommy (Ty Panitz) plunges Sheriff Tom (Jon Hamm) into sorrow and guilt. To alleviate the pain of losing his son, he throws himself entirely into his busy work. The discovery of a boy's corpse makes Tom's heart race; after investigation and identification, it turns out that the boy has been dead for 50 years and is not Tommy. This result brings Tom both joy and sadness—joy that the body is not Tommy, but sorrow that Tommy's fate remains unknown. Tom voluntarily takes on this difficult case, and as the investigation deepens, a man named Matthew (Josh Lucas) and his son John (Jimmy Bennett) surface.
