Ted (Keanu Reeves) and Bill (Alex Winter) are classmates at the same high school and have a very close friendship. Perhaps the reason they hit it off so well is that their IQs are on the same low level as everyone else's. What's worse is that Bill and Ted spend all their time goofing off and have no interest in studying, leading to predictable grades. Just as their history exam approaches, Ted and Bill learn shocking news: if they don't pass the exam, they won't graduate. Stunned and at a loss for what to do, they are suddenly visited by a time traveler named Rufus (George Carlin), who claims to be from the future. Whether Rufus is telling the truth or not, Ted and Bill realize he is their only lifeline to that graduation certificate.
