In a time of war and turmoil, many heroes rise. The Pei Kingdom, content with its status quo, allows its ruler Pei Liang (played by Zheng Kai) to sing praises of peace. The strategic territory of Jingzhou was borrowed long ago by the powerful neighbor Yan State but has yet to be returned. Pei Guo's governor Zi Yu (played by Deng Chao) goes to battle but falls victim to the trickery of the enemy general Yang Cang (played by Hu Jun), sustaining severe injuries that do not heal. Unwilling to accept defeat, Zi Yu secretly sends his double, Jingzhou (played by Deng Chao), to impersonate him, managing military and political affairs while his wife Xiao Ai (played by Sun Li) assists from within. The true and false Zi Yu exchange strategies to seek a way to counter Yang Cang's formidable sword techniques. On the other hand, Pei Liang, angered by Zi Yu’s private challenge to Yang Cang, goes so far as to marry his sister Qing Ping (played by Guan Xiaotong) to Yang Cang’s son as a concubine to forge peace. The rain continues to pour, with days of darkness to follow. Above Jingzhou, a web of slaughter and schemes tears apart... The film is adapted from Zhu Sujin's script "Three Kingdoms: Jingzhou."
