A "big year" is a competition for birdwatching enthusiasts, where participants spend an entire year recording the number of bird species they observe, with the one who sees the most species winning. Brad, Stu, and Kenny are three dedicated birdwatchers. Brad (played by Jack Black) is a middle-aged slacker, and when he decides to spend a large sum of money to participate in the "big year," his parents think he's lost his mind. Stu (played by Steve Martin) is the CEO of a large company, and when he decides to drop a million-dollar business to join the "big year," his assistant thinks he's crazy. The older and younger man meet in competition, quickly become friends, and decide to team up against their strongest opponent—the previous year's champion Kenny (played by Owen Wilson). Only bird enthusiasts understand what it means to give up an entire year of career and life. The three "bird friends" compete fiercely during the big year, only to face the issues of life once it's over... The film is adapted from the 1998 novel by Mark Obmascik.
