The story takes place during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, where talented individuals and patriots criticize the tyranny of Yongzheng (played by Jiang Yang). In order to eliminate these opposing voices, Yongzheng intensifies literary persecution, with anyone who defies him facing extermination of their families. At the same time, Yongzheng assembles a guard team that employs the cruel execution tool, Blood滴子, to kill anyone daring to speak the truth. Xie Tianfu (played by Wang Yu) is a member of the guard team, and he soon discovers that those he kills are all just and brave individuals. This leads him to question Yongzheng's true intentions, after which Xie Tianfu meets an untimely death. The death of his colleague brings clarity to Ma Teng (played by Chen Guantai), who resolves to abandon his former life and flees the capital overnight. Later, Ma Teng arrives in a remote village nestled in the deep mountains, where he hides his identity and marries Yu Zhen (played by Liu Wuqin). Just when he thinks his peaceful life will continue, assassins sent by Yongzheng are closing in.
