In the late Eastern Jin Dynasty, a young lady from a wealthy family, Zhu Yingtai (played by Rita Chao), yearns to go to Hangzhou for studies, but her father refuses, causing her to lose her appetite and fall into melancholy. Soon, Zhu Yingtai devises a clever plan to disguise herself as a man and explain her illness, finally convincing her father to agree. On her way to study, Zhu Yingtai, disguised as a male, encounters the charming Liang Shanbo (played by Ling Po). The two find they have much in common and travel together. After three years as classmates, Zhu Yingtai and Shanbo become close friends, and her feelings for him gradually deepen as they spend time together.
