The continuous influx of opium from Britain made Emperor Daoguang feel that the country was in jeopardy. Despite his fear of the foreign powers, he still issued an edict appointing Governor Lin Zexu (Bao Guoan) as the special envoy to go to Guangzhou to enforce the ban on opium. However, the collusion between corrupt officials and British merchants complicated the opium trade, and Lin Zexu’s anti-opium efforts faced numerous difficulties from the very beginning. While British merchants pretended to comply with Lin Zexu, they were secretly plotting a larger conspiracy. On June 3rd of the 19th year of Daoguang, Lin Zexu commanded the destruction of opium at Humen Beach, much to the delight of the people. British merchants took advantage of this event, and the well-equipped British army advanced from the Pearl River estuary to Tanggu, declaring war on China. The weak and incompetent Daoguang did not send troops to respond but instead blamed Lin Zexu, dismissing him and sending Governor Qishan (Lin Liankun) as the special envoy to negotiate with the British, leading to a historical tragedy.
