General Newville (Jean Dujardin) is about to marry his beloved fiancée Pauline (Noémie Merlant), but at this critical moment, he receives a call to return to the battlefield. Before leaving, Newville promises Pauline that he will write to her often to let her know he is safe, but afterward, Pauline never receives a single letter. Pauline's sister, Elizabeth (Mélanie Laurent), can't bear to see her sister waiting in vain every day, so she decides to impersonate Newville and write letters to her. In these letters, Elizabeth fabricates many heroic exploits, and to her surprise, proud Pauline shares these letters around, turning the fictitious Newville into a local hero. Three years pass in the blink of an eye, and when both Pauline and Elizabeth believe the real Newville has perished in battle, Newville suddenly reappears before Pauline, though only he knows that he is actually a deserter.
