The story takes place in the 19th century South Asian subcontinent, where Danny (played by Sean Connery) and Billy (played by Michael Caine) do not rush back to their homeland after completing their military service. They discover an ancient kingdom called Kafiristan, inhabited by uncivilized natives. Danny and Billy are confident they can use their intelligence and advanced technology to convince these tribespeople that they are the destined kings of the kingdom. Initially, things are not as simple as they hoped, but a series of unexpected events lead the natives to gradually believe that the seemingly invulnerable Danny is their prophesied ruler and deity. Thus, Danny successfully ascends to the throne, enjoying the love and admiration of his subjects. Overconfident, Danny plans to marry a local beauty, only to find that this move brings him a crisis of trust.
