Martin (Elijah Wood) pursues the trace of his idol, the logical mathematician Arthur (John Hurt), and goes to Oxford University for further study. He discovers that his landlady, Mrs. Igleton (Anna Massey), seems to have a close relationship with Arthur, while her adopted daughter Beth (Julie Cox) always behaves mysteriously. Later, Martin meets his squash partner Lorna (Leonor Watling), and the two fall in love... During Arthur's lecture, Martin, as the only questioner, catches his attention. Later, they unexpectedly meet at the landlady's house and find Mrs. Igleton has been murdered. The only clue at the scene is a circle. They are taken away by the police to assist in the investigation. After that, more people die in strange circumstances, and the causes of their deaths seem to imply a certain mathematical law...
