Walter (played by Mel Gibson) was once a successful president of a toy company, but the impact of the financial crisis left him on the brink of bankruptcy and suffering from depression. His negative energy affected every family member, leading his wife Meredith (played by Jodie Foster) to reluctantly ask him to move out. Despondent, Walter began drinking his days away, and after a failed suicide attempt, he found himself wearing a beaver puppet that began to incessantly talk to him. Through his interactions with the beaver, Walter gradually regained his courage to live, but he seemed increasingly dependent on the puppet. His wife felt a mix of hope and helplessness regarding his recovery, raising the question of whether Walter is, in fact, the one controlled by the beaver puppet, and how he can return to a normal life.
