One day in 1958, Anna Jullien (played by Virginie Ledoyen), whose body and mind are covered in scars, is hired to clean the Saint Angel Orphanage located at the foot of the Alps in France. This orphanage has a long history and during World War II served as a temporary children's hospital that took in over 300 children. Now, the children are moving to a new place with their caretaker, Franca (played by Catriona MacColl), and the old Saint Angel is on the verge of being abandoned, fading along with the secrets it holds from history. In the vast orphanage, aside from the Polish caretaker Helena, there is also a mad little girl named Judith (played by Lou Doillon). She wanders through the rooms like a ghost, surrounded by invisible children. Anna finds herself reluctantly drawn into this world and gradually uncovers its secrets...
