In February 1943, the brutal Battle of Stalingrad was at a stalemate. In Munich, members of the underground anti-war group White Rose were intensifying their effort to distribute leaflets. Among them, Sophie (portrayed by Julia Jentsch) and her brother Hans planned to distribute the leaflets at the university campus in response to the recent actions of female students, risking their lives to enter the school. Unfortunately, they were captured after distributing the leaflets. Gestapo officer Mohr was in charge of interrogating Sophie. The siblings, adhering to their pre-arranged lines, denied any connection to the anti-war leaflets and could have been released without charges; however, the Nazis discovered new evidence, and the situation turned grim. Sophie began to take the blame upon herself to protect her companions. After repeated confrontations, Mohr started to develop some understanding and sympathy for the steadfast young woman, but what awaited Sophie was ultimately a closed and unfair trial... This film is based on a true story and won several accolades, including Best Director at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival.
