Walter (Bruce Willis) is a workaholic who invests all his energy into his job, leaving his romantic life empty. One day, his boss sends him to a banquet hosted by an important client, prompting Walter to anxiously seek a female companion to accompany him to the event. Walter's brother Ted (Phil Hartman) introduces him to his sister-in-law Nadia (Kim Basinger), hoping to matchmake Walter and Nadia. However, there's a catch: while Nadia is great in many aspects, she has a terrible tolerance for alcohol. Ted warns Walter repeatedly to keep an eye on Nadia and ensure she doesn't drink too much, but mishaps occur when a drunken Nadia causes a series of hilarious incidents at the banquet.
