Office worker Paul (played by Griffin Dunne) goes to a restaurant for a late-night snack after work. The book "The Tropic of Cancer" in his hands catches the attention of a mysterious woman, Marcy (played by Rosanna Arquette), who approaches him. Marcy leaves her phone number and introduces him to her roommate, a female sculptor named Qiqi. In pursuit of a romantic encounter, Paul calls Marcy at midnight. Her home is chaotic due to paper sculptures, and she is eager to talk endlessly, making it difficult for Paul to succeed. He finds it unbearable to witness the neurotic behavior of the unseen man "Franklin" with Marcy. Just as he desires to return home, he becomes entangled in a series of troubles with the bar owner, a bar waitress, punk youths, two thieves, and a young woman driving an ice cream truck. It seems that everyone is preventing Paul from getting home that night. The film won the Best Director award at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival and the Best Director award at the 1986 Independent Spirit Awards.
