John Winger (Bill Murray) not only gets fired but also loses his girlfriend at the same time. In a moment of impulse, the aimless John persuades his friend Russell (Harold Ramis) to join the army with him. They envision the army camp as an ideal place for self-reinvention, not realizing that they will be trained by a stubborn and impatient Sergeant Hulka (Warren Oates) and that their fellow soldiers are all mediocre and often find themselves in hilariously awkward situations.
