This film is adapted from Blake Morrison's novel of the same name and directed by the renowned director Anand Tucker, who also directed "Still Life" and "Shopgirl." Blake Morrison (played by Colin Firth), a forty-year-old columnist, has just quit his job to prepare to write a novel. The news of his father Arthur's (played by Jim Broadbent) terminal illness leads him to recall the past: his father's authoritarian love not only took away the fleeting joy of childhood but also distanced their relationship over time. As adult Blake continues to clash with his father, his father is fighting against illness. However, even at this moment, Blake cannot let go of the complex relationship between his father and the woman Betty (played by Anne-Marie Duff) from his memories.
