Directed by Roma and Zhang Yang, "The Adventures of A Niu in the City" follows A Niu (Ye Feng), a simple country boy who comes to Hong Kong and witnesses the bizarre and extraordinary aspects of the lower social strata in Hong Kong, filled with both sorrow and joy, blood and tears. A Niu's naïve and straightforward nature often leads him to be exploited by others. Uncle Zhou (Wang Sha) takes him to work at a gambling stall "watching water," which A Niu mistakenly believes involves watching a bucket of water, resulting in a comedic mishap. A Niu has taken on various jobs and has frequently been used by bad elements, such as helping to "catch yellow chickens" for extortion, and performing "A Niu's strip show" in the walled city. However, A Niu's innocent and pure character endears him to A Hua, reflecting the traditional belief in the kindness of society: there is always a way out for those in despair. Later, A Niu works as a laborer at the dock, and during a workers' strike, he continues to work and ends up getting beaten. In defending himself, A Niu causes a major commotion and gets thrown in jail. The ending is undoubtedly tragic, but it showcases the cleverness of the creators, leaving a cliffhanger that makes the audience eager for the next installment, "The Adventures of A Niu Out of Jail."
