This film, a collaboration between Shaw Brothers and the British company Hammer Films, combines Western vampire lore with the Chinese “Xiangxi corpse transport” legend and is considered the ancestor of zombie films in Hong Kong. In Xiangxi, China, the master of the ancient temple of Seven Golden Corpses uses the power of Dracula to resurrect the Seven Golden Corpses, intending to control the villages of Xiangxi again. Unexpectedly, Dracula kills the master, attaches to his corpse, and returns to China to resurrect the Seven Golden Corpses. To save his hometown, Hsi Ching (played by David Chiang) returns home with his teacher, the astrologer Professor Van Helsing, his son, and a wealthy widow Mrs. Buren to catch the zombies... The film blends local and foreign elements, but due to the overwhelming mix of content, contemporary audiences could not accept it, resulting in a box office disaster. The Hong Kong film industry did not dare to tackle zombie themes for the following decade.
