The story takes place during the Northern Ireland conflict. British soldier Jodie (played by Forest Whitaker) is kidnapped by the IRA in Armagh, who plan to use him in exchange for prisoners held by the British army. His guard, Fergus (played by Stephen Rea), feels lost and helpless in the face of killing and war, and he empathizes with Jodie's plight, leading them to become good friends. The IRA ultimately fails to secure the prisoner exchange, and Fergus is ordered to execute Jodie; however, he secretly lets him go. Before leaving, Jodie gives Fergus a photograph of his girlfriend Dil, telling Fergus he can find her in London.
Unexpectedly, Jodie is killed by a British tank while trying to escape. Tired of the war, Fergus flees to London, adopting the name Jimmy. He finds Dil in London and is deeply attracted to her, but later discovers she is transgender. Meanwhile, the IRA sends a message that Fergus has been sentenced to death, demanding that he participate in a suicide mission!
