The story revolves around a dilapidated old-style courtyard, vividly portraying the lives of the seventy-two tenants living there. The tenants, under the oppression of the landlord Auntie (played by Hu Jin), find no peace in their daily lives. Auntie is flirtatious and domineering, treating people harshly. Yet her adoptive daughter Ah Xiang (played by Jing Li) is eager to help others. Eventually, Auntie's harsh rule of "tenants can only use two buckets of water a day" becomes the catalyst for protest, led by the Shanghai laundress (played by Shen Dianxia) who receives support from the other tenants. Along with the support of Fa Zi (played by Yue Hua) and Ah Fu (played by He Shouxin), a series of clever and brave little stories unfold one after another.
This film, "The 72 Tenants," produced by Shaw Brothers Studio in Hong Kong, is adapted from the classic stage play of the same name. The film not only features powerful actors such as Yue Hua, Jing Li, Tian Qing, Hu Jin, and He Shouxin, but also includes many popular film and television stars making cameo appearances, reflecting the diverse human experiences of Hong Kong society at that time.
