In the selection of talents at the Han court, Wang Zhaojun (played by Lin Dai), confident in her beauty and talent, refuses to bribe the shameless court painter Mao Yanshou (played by Hong Bo). Mao, harboring resentment, intends to defame Zhaojun, resulting in her not receiving the favor of Emperor Yuan (played by Zhao Lei) for the following three years. Zhaojun, full of grievances with no one to confide in, sits in solitude, gazing at the moon and expressing her sorrow through lamenting songs. One evening, as Emperor Yuan takes a leisurely stroll, he unexpectedly hears Zhaojun’s singing and is astonished by her divine beauty. Upon further investigation, he discovers how Mao Yanshou abuses his power as a painter to distort the truth. After this incident, Zhaojun ascends in status and receives the emperor’s favor. Flustered and in a panic, Mao attempts to flee north. He carries a portrait of Zhaojun and presents it to the Xiongnu khan, falsely claiming to be sent by Emperor Yuan to propose a marriage alliance. The khan, believing him, offers a betrothal gift, which is rejected by Emperor Yuan. Humiliated, the Xiongnu raise an army to invade the central plains, thus unfolding the timeless legend of Zhaojun leaving her homeland… This film is adapted from the classic opera "Zhaojun Leaving the Frontier."
