In the Eastern Jin period of 337 AD, the trend of social status was very prominent. To consolidate their position in the court, the Zhu family, a family of third-rank officials, betrothed their only daughter, Zhu Yingtai (played by Yang Caini), to Governor Ma. However, worried that their daughter, who was not keen on studying, might embarrass the family, they instructed her to disguise herself as a male and attend the academy for better education. Since the academy was composed entirely of boys, Madam Zhu (played by Wu Jiali) asked the director’s wife to particularly look after her beloved daughter. In the academy, Zhu Yingtai met Liang Shanbo, who came from a poor background but was determined to learn. Due to their shared ideals, the two became very close. In their daily interactions, Liang Shanbo discovered Zhu Yingtai's true identity, and they fell in love. From then on, Liang Shanbo dedicated himself to studying, hoping to win fame and marry Zhu Yingtai, yet the divide between their social standings proved difficult to overcome.
