In an unexpected encounter, the scholar Zhang Sheng meets the wealthy young lady Cui Yingying, and Zhang Sheng becomes her savior. Due to the gratitude of saving her life, Cui Yingying's mother reluctantly agrees to the marriage between Zhang Sheng and her daughter, not knowing she would later change her mind. Deeply missing Cui Yingying, Zhang Sheng falls ill with lovesickness and cannot recover. Cui Yingying's maid, Hongniang, cannot bear to see this talented couple tormented by fate, so she secretly plays matchmaker, setting up a meeting that creates an opportunity for Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying to see each other. Their feelings for each other quickly intensify. Before long, their affair is discovered by Madame Cui, who detains Hongniang but is bewildered by her cleverness and ends up agreeing to the marriage of the two. In the end, Zhang Sheng promises Madame Cui that he will go to the capital to take the imperial examination and, after becoming the top scholar, will come to marry his beloved.
