In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, the court issued an order prohibiting martial arts practice among the people. The abbot of Shaolin Temple knew this was a result of the Qing court wanting to eliminate Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of martial arts, which was like a thorn in their flesh. Anticipating that Shaolin Temple would eventually face a great calamity, he decided to take in lay disciples for training, spreading the unique martial arts of Shaolin throughout the populace, hoping to create a situation where "wild grass cannot be eradicated."
