San Francisco detective Frank Connor (Andy Garcia) is desperately searching for a compatible bone marrow donor for his critically ill son, who urgently needs a transplant due to leukemia. After many setbacks, Frank finally finds a matching donor, who turns out to be the murderer Peter McCabe (Michael Keaton). Initially refusing, McCabe quickly agrees after seeing Frank's son. On the day of the surgery, Frank's superior Cassidy (Brian Cox) is on site to supervise. However, at the moment the surgery begins, the scheming McCabe suddenly leaps off the operating table and takes Frank's son hostage. In a bid to save his son, Frank convinces Cassidy to let him enter the treatment room alone to negotiate with McCabe. Yet, the situation is more complicated than anticipated; desperate to escape, McCabe hijacks a car and flees.
